Metrics 2.0: Wireless revenue share is almost 49% of all telecom services revenue

According to the new industry study, wireless revenue will approach almost 49% of all telecommunications services revenue by the close of 2006 and will grow to 55.6% of all telecommunications industry revenue by 2010. The global telecommunications industry revenue will reach $1.2 trillion by the close of 2006, with continued strong growth in wireless communications leading the way, says a new market analysis report from Insight Research. By the beginning of 2006, over 1.8 billion subscribers worldwide will be depending on mobile wireless telephones.

As stated in the study, worldwide telecommunications services revenue is expected to grow at a compounded annual rate of 5.9% from 2005 through 2010, with services revenue estimated to grow from $1.2 trillion in 2006 to almost $1.6 trillion in 2010. The study highlights rapidly growing industry segments such as VoIP, WiFi, fixed-mobile convergence, IMS, and streaming media, as well as technological innovations such as grid computing and DWDM and WDM in fiber optics.

Global revenues from mobile data services surpassed US$100 billion for the first time in 2005 according to data from Informa Telecoms & Media's World Cellular Data Metrics. The figure of US$102.1 billion is equal to US$52.9 per everymobile subscription throughout the year or USD$4.4 per month.

Strong data revenue growth has continued into 2006, with the 1Q figure of US$28.4 billion up 17% year-on-year. NTT DoCoMo continues to generate the highest non-voice revenues, based on data for 114 operators tracked. Its total of US$2.5 billion for 1Q06 compares to second-placed operator China Mobile (US$1.9 billion) and Japanese rival KDDI US$1.5 billion in third. Three US operators (Verizon Wireless, Cingular Wireless and Sprint Nextel) recorded data revenues above US$800 million, while the leading European operator was O2 UK (US$570 million).
