Worldwide PC shipment growth slipped to 7.9% in 3Q, HP retakes No.1

Worldwide PC shipment growth slipped to 7.9% in the third quarter to 57 million units, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. By comparison, the overall growth was 9.8% in 2Q 2006 and enjoyed double-digit growth over the prior three years. International shipments continued to expand at roughly 11% year on year, but slow growth in the United States pulled down overall results.

CEO and Directors Pay Up Again - Reports The Conference Board

Median total compensation for U.S. CEOs was higher in all industries in 2005, according to in The Conference Board's annual study on CEO and directors pay. 

Median total CEO compensation (salary, bonus and long-term pay) was highest in the construction industry at $2,604,000. It was lowest in computer services at $848,000. Total current compensation (salary plus bonus) was again highest in construction at $1,936,000 and lowest in computer services at $805,000. The highest median salary, $700,000, was in communications; lowest was computer services, which paid $441,000.

WSJ By The Numbers - Top 10 for Oct.21

A compendium of revealing stats and the key leading economic indicators and business metrics based on today's Wall Street Journal article and reports:

At GM, Vehicle Sales Slide 3%: GM vehicle sales fell 3% in the third quarter, as it sold 2.3 million vehicles world-wide in the period. However GM's U.S. market share, which fell below 24% in the first quarter of the year, recovered to 25.1% in the three months ended in September. 

GM sales in China, where it become the market leader earlier in 2006, gained 37% in the third quarter. Sales to Russia and India surged 64% and 18%, respectively. GM's U.S. market leader with 24.7% share for the first nine months of 2006 on an 11.3% decline in sales, according to Autodata.

Venture-backed IPOs YTD - Europe: 56, US: 37

There were 14 venture-backed initial public offerings in Europe in the third quarter of 2006 and the year's total so far is 56, according to VentureOne (via AP), compared to 39 for the same period last year. In contrast,  venture-backed companies in the United States had just 8 IPOs over the third quarter and 37 for the year to date.

California Leads World in Biomedical with $62B in Revenue

California's biomedical industry is the second largest contributor to its high technology economy, second only to computer consulting and programming, according to a report by the California Healthcare Institute (CHI) and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

California biomedical industry accounted for $62 billion in revenue in the state last year.
