8M Households Spent At Least $500 Purchasing Online in Last 3 Months

Some 75% of the 80 million U.S. online households have purchased products over the Internet, with more than two-thirds having made an online purchase within the past 3 months, according to a new report from Forrester Research. Online shoppers spending levels during the past three months, according to Forrester are:  
  • 19% spent $500 during the past three months 
  • 16% spent between $250 and $499 
  • 26% spent between $100 and $249 
  • 39% spent between $1 and $99

Those who spent at least $500 during the past three months account for about 10% of the U.S. online population (8 million households). Online commerce, excluding travel and auctions, is expected to exceed $270 billion by 2011, estimates Forrester.

Online retail sales totaled $44 billion in Q3 2006, a 12% jump compared with Q3 2005, according to Forrester and it expects Q4 to finish strong, with holiday sales reaching $27 billion.
