Business Use of Wireless IM to Exceed $2 Billion

The business use of mobile Instant Messaging (IM) will grow to a $2 billion-plus opportunity in Western Europe and North America by 2010, according to a report from Strategy Analytics. Mobile IM will emerge as a valuable real-time data complement to voice, mobile email and SMS. 

U.S. is expected to have over 20 million installed base of business instant messaging users by 2010 from under 3 million in 2006. Overall, Western Europe and North America will have over 50 million installed base of IM business users by 2010.

255% Increase in TV-title Video Downloads; iTunes Leads with 67% Share

Downloading TV programs from the Web is becoming more popular with consumers.  There was a 39% increase in subscription rentals of TV content and a 255% increase in TV-title digital video downloads between August 2005 and August 2006, according to NPD Group.  

For the year to date ending in August 2006, iTunes was the most popular paid video download site with 67% of video downloads. MovieFlix followed with 19% and CinemaNow was third with 9%.

Online Research Influences 77% or $25.1 billion of Consumer Electronics Purchases

Of the total $32.5 billion spent on the CE products tracked in a study, Internet research influenced a striking 77% or $25.1 billion, according to a joint Consumer Electronics Association and Yahoo! study. This includes search engines, manufacturer's websites, retail websites and shopping engines.

Consumer Electronics Gifts to Reach $21 billion this Holiday Season; MP3 Players Tops

Consumer electronics (CE) gifts will account for a 25% of all holiday gifts with revenues reaching $21 billion this holiday season, compared to $17 billion or 21% during the 2005 holiday season, according to Consumer Electronics Association.

WSJ By The Numbers - Top 10 for Oct.24

A compendium of revealing stats and the key leading economic indicators and business metrics based on today's Wall Street Journal article and reports:

Still Built on the Homefront: With over 300,000 manufacturing facilities, manufacturing represents only 17% of GDP in U.S., while it represents 41% of GDP in China. 

However U.S. still leads the world in terms of value of manufacturing goods with $1.79 trillion in 2005, followed by Japan ($0.99 trillion), China ($0.78 trillion) and Germany ($0.5 trillion). Others contribute $2.97 trillion for the world total of $7.03 trillion in manufacturing output.

U.S. VC Investing Up 5% to $6.36B in 3Q; Web 2.0 Deals Rose 41%

For the third time in a row, U.S. venture capital investing in 2006 continued to outpace last year's activity, with $6.36 billion directed to 611 deals during the 3rd quarter, according to the Quarterly Venture Capital Report by Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst & Young.
