Gartner: Global PC Shipments Hit 239M in 2006; 4Q HP Shipments Rose 23.9%; Dell Fell 8.7%

PC unit shipments grew 7.4% to 67.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2006,
and for the second consecutive quarter, Hewlett-Packard was the No. 1
vendor with shipments jumping 23.9% to give it a leading market share of
17.4%, according to Gartner.
Dell remained in the No. 2 position in the quarter, but its shipments decreased 8.7%, resulting in its market share total of 13.9%.
Worldwide PC shipments rose 9.5% to 239 million units in 2006, according to Gartner.
Worldwide PC shipments grew by 8.7% to 65.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2006, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. IDC said, for all of 2006, PC shipments reached 228.6 million with growth of 10.0% compared to growth of 16% in 2005 and a forecast of 10.4% for 2006.
Highlights from Gartner report:
Fourth quarter PC shipments in the U.S. decreased 3.2%. This was the second consecutive quarter that U.S. market showed a year on year decline.
In the fourth quarter of 2006, home desk-based PC shipments declined more than 20% from the fourth quarter of 2005 while mobile PC shipments increased more than 20%.
Dell maintained the No. 1 position in the U.S. PC market in the fourth quarter of 2006, but its PC shipments declined 17.3%, leaving it with a market share of 29.1%. HP’s shipments increased 16% giving it a 25.3% unit market share in the fourth quarter.

Worldwide, Dell and HP shared the No. 1 position in 2006, as both vendors had worldwide PC shipment market share totals of 15.9%. Toshiba moved into the worldwide top 5 table, surpassing Fujitsu/Fujitsu Siemens.
For 2006, U.S. PC shipments totaled 61.1 million units, a 1.2% increase from 2005.
PC shipments in EMEA totaled 80.3 million units in 2006, a 10.8% increase from 2005.
In Asia/Pacific, PC shipments reached 59.9 million units in 2006, a 17.2% increase from 2005.
The Latin America PC market had a strong year with shipment growth of 24.7% in 2006, with shipments totaling 18.6 million units.
In Japan, PC shipments totaled 14.2 million units in 2006, a 3.3%decline from 2005.
