US Corporate R&D Spending to Reach $219 billion This Year

Total R&D spending in the U.S. will increase 2.85% to $338 billion in 2007. U.S. companies are expected to spend $219 billion on R&D, a 3.4% increase over the $212 billion last year, according to a report from Battelle Memorial Institute, published by R&D Magazine.

Economic Indicators: 8.4% Home Sales Drop Biggest in 17 Years; Online Job Ads Up 17%

Total existing-home sales declined 0.8% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate1 of 6.22 million units in December from 6.27 million in November, according to the National Association of Realtors. Sales were down 7.9% in last year from 6.75 million-unit pace in December 2005.

Worldwide Mobile Phone Shipments Surpass One Billion Unit Mark in 2006: IDC

Led by strong demand in emerging markets including India and China, worldwide mobile phone market reached a new milestone as vendors shipped a total of 1.019 billion units in 2006, a 22.5% increase from 832.8 million units they shipped in 2005, according to IDC.

Debit Card Overdraft Costs $2 for Every Dollar Borrowed; Banks Get $53B in Fees

More banks are allowing customers to overdraw with debit card purchases and at ATMs, then hitting them with fees of up to $35, according to the Center for Responsible Lending.

China Economy Grows 10.7% in 2006; Set to Overtake Germany as 3rd Largest Economy

China economy grew by 10.7% in 2006, at its fastest rate in a decade, moving China closer to overtaking Germany as the world's third-largest economy, according to figures issued by the government. It was the fastest growth since 1995, when the economy expanded by 10.9%.

Americans Spent $27.8 billion on Gift Cards, More than Expected; Less Than Half Redeemed

American consumers spent an average of $164.81 on gift cards, up from the $146.20 they expected to spend, driving the total gift card spending during the 2006 holiday season to $27.8 billion, according to an NRF survey, conducted by BIGresearch.
