Microsoft Beats Google for Top Spot in Corporate Reputation Rankings; Top 60 are...

Microsoft jumps seven places over last year to rank No. 1 in the annual reputation survey "Annual RQ 2006" conducted by Harris Interactive. Johnson & Johnson ranks second and 3M ranks third, followed by Google at No.4 and The Coca-Cola Company at No.5.

2006 Personal Savings Rate Was at a 74-Year Low

Personal savings rate for all of 2006 declined to a negative 1%, lower than a negative 0.4% in 2005 and was the lowest since a negative 1.5% savings rate in 1933 during the Depression, according to data from the Commerce Department.

Vodafone Crosses 200M Subscriber Mark; China Mobile Still the No.1

UK mobile phone giant Vodafone Group reported that it had crossed the 200 million subscriber mark in January. The firm added a net 8.7 million new customers in its fiscal third quarter to December 31, taking its total to 198.6 million at the end of 2006.

Some 5.1% of the Hedge Funds Shut Down Last Year

Some 5.1% of hedge funds shut down in 2006 because of dwindling trading opportunities, poor performance, career moves or other reasons, down from 5.4% closures in 2005 and a 6.2% rate in 2004, according to Hennessee Group survey.

Company Directors Average Pay Jumps 12% to Pass $160,000 in 2006; CEO Pay Was $7M

The average total cash and stock-based pay for the 13,000 directors of nearly 1,500 companies on Standard & Poor's indexes rose 11.6% to $160,493 in 2006, on increased workloads and responsibilities of Sarbanes-Oxley, according to Institutional Shareholder Services.

January Job Cuts Jump 15% to Nearly 62,975; But Down 39% YoY: Challenger Survey

In January, U.S. employers announced plans to reduce payrolls by 62,975 jobs, up 15% from 54,643 in December, - on cost cutting; downturn in demand; and the closing of facilities - according to monthly downsizing data released by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.

New VC Funds Median Size Tops $200 million in 2006

The median size of U.S. venture funds raised in 2006 exceeded $200 million for the second year in a row, according to industry tracker Dow Jones VentureOne, reports AP. The 2006 median was $200.6 million, following a record $205.5 in 2005. It hit a low of $75M in 2002.

Top 15 Web Properties Worldwide for Dec 06; Internet Users Up 10% in 2006

Worldwide Internet usage increased 10% in December 2006 compared to December 2005, according to the comScore. The Search/Navigation category grew 9%, led by Google which rose 13% in worldwide visitors in 2006.  Microsoft and Yahoo! Sites each grew 5% worldwide during 2006.
