Fewer New Jobs Added in January; Unemployment Rate Rises to 4.6%

Nonfarm payroll employment rose by 111,000 in January, after 206,000 jobs were created in December, and the unemployment rate was edged up to 4.6% from 4.5% in December 2006, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

A survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project has found that 28% of internet users in have tagged or categorized content online such as photos, news stories or blog posts, . On a typical day online, 7% of internet users say they tag or categorize online content.

Residential Voice over IP Subscribers to Grow 7-Fold to 267 Million by 2012 

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone services will grow to a subscriber base of 267 million by 2012 from less than 38 million subscribers worldwide in 2006, according to a new study released by ABI Research.

Gartner: Worldwide Security Software Market to Reach $9.1 billion in 2007

Worldwide security software revenue is expected to increase 10.7% to reach $9.1 billion in 2007, compared to $8.2 billion in 2006, driven by continued growth in the antivirus software market, according to Gartner.

U.N. Panel 90% Certain Global Warming is Man-Made

A UN panel of 2,500 scientists from more than 130 nations said it was "very likely" -- or more than 90% probable -- that human activities led by burning fossil fuels explained most of the warming in the past 50 years. The scientists predicted more droughts, heatwaves, rains and a slow gain in sea levels that could last for more than 1,000 years.

World-Class HR Organizations: Spend 13% Less; Operate with 15% Fewer Staff

World-class companies now spend $1,614 per employee on HR, 13% less than typical companies, which spend $1,864, according to 2006 Enterprise Book of Numbers research from The Hackett Group. 

World-class HR organizations also operate with 15% fewer staff, with 11.5 FTEs per 1000 employees versus 13.5 for typical companies.
