Worldwide Server Shipments Rose 8.9% in 2006; Revenue Reaches $53 billion: Gartner
Worldwide
computer server shipments increased 8.9% to 8.2 million units in 2006,
while worldwide server revenue was up just 2% to $52.7 billion last year, according
to Gartner. Mainframes with 3.9% jump had the strongest revenue growth of
any segment for the year.
Other Highlights:
- RISC-Itanium Unix servers shipments fell 1.6% and revenue slipped 0.8%.
- IBM continued to lead the worldwide server market with $16.9 billion revenue in 2006 for a 32% market share, followed by HP at 27% share.
- Of the top five global vendors, only Sun gained revenue share for the year with a share gain of 1.2% to reach 10.8%.

Server Shipments:
Hewlett-Packard remained the worldwide leader for 2006 with 8% growth to reach 2.26 million units.
Of the top 10 vendors in server shipments worldwide, Rackable Systems had the highest growth with a 68% increase for the year.
Blade servers continue to be a high-growth segment with a revenue increase of 36.5% and a shipment increase of 33.0% for the year. IBM leads the market with a 41.1% revenue share of blades while HP finished the year with a 32.5% share.
