User-Generated Content No.1 Threat to Media and Entertainment Industry: Accenture Survey
Media
and entertainment executives see the growing ability and eagerness of
individuals to create their own content as one of the biggest threats to
their business, according
to a recent Accenture survey.

While Americans still love their TVs for watching television
programming and DVDs, at the end of 2006, 58% of Americans age 12 or older with Internet
access had streamed some form of video content online, according to
Ipsos Insight from
Consumer
spending on Internet downloads of movies and TV shows will surpass $4
billion in 2011, up from just $111 million in 2006,
Nearly
60% of communications industry executives from 46 countries believe that
Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) can generate significant revenue
within the first three years of service, according to findings of a
survey by Accenture (ACN) and the
Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
A
survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project has found that 28%
of internet users in have tagged or categorized content online such as
photos, news stories or blog posts, . On a typical day online, 7% of
internet users say they tag or categorize online content.

By
2010 more than half (55%) of all the video content consumed online in the
US will be user generated, representing 44 billion video streams, but the
user generated videos will make up just 15% of total online video
revenues,
